This module introduces approaches and tools for analyzing training needs from different perspectives. Participants will learn how to design effective questions and select appropriate data collection methods, including interviews, focus groups, and questionnaires. The module also covers how to carry out these methods in a neutral, non-leading way to ensure reliable data. Participants will design needs assessment tools and practice leading interviews and focus groups.

Learning objectives translate the results of a needs assessment into clear statements of instructional intent. They specify what learners should be able to do differently and form the foundation for both training design and evaluation. In this module, participants will learn to write behaviourally specific objectives and will have opportunities to draft their own.

Effective training design goes beyond slides and case studies. This module introduces research on how people learn and remember, and explores methods trainers can use to support learning and retention. Participants will examine a range of approaches—from lectures and discussions to case studies, role plays, and demonstrations—and will practice designing an experiential workshop.

Evaluation determines whether participants found the training useful, acquired the intended skills, applied them in the workplace, and achieved the stated outcomes. This module covers practical evaluation methods, including reaction sheets, pre/post tests, observation checklists, and transfer questionnaires. Participants will design tools to evaluate learning at multiple levels.

No. We start with your real work context and build from there. If you already teach, great—bring a course to refine.
Will this count for CEUs?
You’ll receive an 18‑hour Certificate of Completion plus documentation for self‑reported CE, where accepted. For formally recognized CEUs, ask about partner‑run cohorts.
Is there homework?
Light prep between sessions (1–2 hours) so your capstone design comes together smoothly.

About Alison.
Alison McEachern
I started teaching piano in high school and university, where I found that I really enjoyed helping others learn. By the time I graduated, I had built a small piano school, teaching both adults and children with a hands-on approach. That experience led me to pursue a career in teaching—specifically, experiential education.
That focus took me into advanced studies in education and a teaching role at Dalhousie University’s Henson College. In 1992, I founded McEachern & Associates, and in 1995, I began a 25-year teaching contract with St. FX University. Over the years, I’ve designed and delivered experiential learning programs for organizations across Canada and the U.S., with more than 30,000 participants attending my courses.
Outside of work, I spend as much time outdoors as possible—traveling, horseback riding, and tackling long-distance hikes. I’m certified in wilderness first aid and navigation, and while I can’t say I’ve never been lost, I’ve always found my way back. If you’re in Chester, NS, drop by my office at 20 Pleasant Street to say hello to me and my canine coworker, Bear!
